<p style="font-weight: 400;">It feels odd to use the word “balance” when talking about life.  The picture that comes to mind is a balanced scale, or teeter-totter, but the reality is that life events, activities, and responsibilities aren’t always going to be balanced evenly as a teeter-totter would be.  Creating life balance is about being present, and feeling fulfilled in all areas of life.  When you’re able to achieve fulfillment, you’ll feel emotionally and physically balanced and live life in a positive, passionate way.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The key to creating fulfillment in life is to follow some very simple rules:</p>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;">Breathe</li>
</ol>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Breathing is free, portable and life-changing.  Stop what you’re doing.  Place both feet flat on the floor, relax your shoulders, close your eyes and place one hand on your belly while the other rests on your lap.  Now use your nose to inhale, filling every area of your belly full of air.  Pause at the top of the inhalation and then exhale through the mouth.  Repeat often.</p>
<ol start="2">
<li style="font-weight: 400;">Be Present</li>
</ol>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">When we take things one step at a time, and focus on the task at hand we are more productive and less stressed overall.  Break the multi-tasking cycle and begin accomplishing one “to-do” at a time.  This provides us space to think clearly, be direct about our goals for the day, and structure accordingly to achieve them.</p>
<ol start="3">
<li style="font-weight: 400;">Positive Affirmation</li>
</ol>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Researchers believe we have 60,000 thoughts a day and 80% of them are negative!  We’re filling our brains with self-limiting beliefs when we allow negative thoughts and self-talk to exist in life.  This is a sure-fire way to feel unfulfilled and out of balance in life.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Start replacing the negative chatter with a positive affirmation.  When you hear the negative chatter, silently say “there’s no space in my life for this to exist” and replace the negative thoughts with a positive affirmation.  An affirmation is an “I AM” statement such as “I AM CAPABLE” or “I AM CONFIDENT” or “I AM WORTHY” to support you in health and happiness.  Use powerful words that speak to you and carry meaning in your life.</p>
<ol start="4">
<li style="font-weight: 400;">Release Control</li>
</ol>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">There’s no need to fret about the decisions another person makes; nor the reaction a person may have to the choices you make in life.  You can only control the choices you make and the responses you have in this life.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Begin to release control of other’s decisions and responses by giving them permission to respond however they need to respond.  This can be done silently, or communicated directly to the person in a caring, loving way.    This will free you up to experience more fulfillment and joy in your own life.</p>
<ol start="5">
<li style="font-weight: 400;">Live a life of Gratitude</li>
</ol>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The practice of gratitude sheds new light on a situation, affirms the positive in your life, and helps you celebrate all that is good.  Take time every day to express gratitude for the big and small things in your life.  Write down 5-10 things you’re grateful for each morning upon waking, and again at night before going to sleep.</p>

<p>We’ve all experienced the uncertainty of tomorrow, we’re concerned for the health of our community, and we look ahead to brighter days to come.  While many things feel completely out of our control, there’s plenty that we can focus on in a positive manner, and at the top of the list is our health!</p>
<p>Today, I’m sharing my quick-tips guide to boosting your immune system.  This is the perfect time to sneak spinach into your kiddo’s morning smoothie, to grill up some wild-caught salmon for dinner and enjoy an evening walk together as a family.  The simplest of choices can make a BIG difference in your health and happiness.  Take a look at the guide, choose a couple of things you can do right now to boost the immune system, share the information with friends and family and support your body to the best of your ability!</p>

<p>It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years now.  Sometimes it feels like just yesterday that I was going through a massive health crisis, trying to find my way in a world with no answers.  And the day I did get my diagnosis, I was told to go home and prepare for a rare neuromuscular disease to take my life.  Not really the news I had hoped for, but looking back it was exactly what I needed.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I needed a wake up call.  Something to shake me to the core and help me see that my habits, my choices, and my focus needed to shift into a higher-quality place.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I feel incredibly blessed to be here today, to have found my way, then return to school to ensure I could help others find their way too.  Health is something we all need to work at daily, and it’s better when we’re working at it together.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>My mission is simple:  Ignite health, resilience and happiness in others.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I’ve had the privilege of guiding individuals and organizations for almost 10 years now, to achieve health as they excel in business.  And today I want to do more.  There’s never been a better time to give more of myself to others; stress and demands are at an all-time high.  I can help you navigate the storm and come out on top.</p>

<p>I grew up striving for perfection and it impacted every area of life . . . I’d get stomach aches over my school grades, push myself too far sometimes in sports, and I was a rule follower; I never wanted to “rock the boat” for fear of conflict or even worse, failure.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Maybe you’ve found yourself here at one point or another too.  I hear about the need to please, and striving for perfection a lot while working with my clients.  I believe we’ve all been trained to think we have to do everything “just so” in order to achieve health, success and happiness.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Quite frankly, the exact opposite is true.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If we never experience failure, how can we succeed beyond our wildest imagination?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If we never experience darkness, how are we to see the light?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If we keep ourselves confined in a box, how will we ever learn to fly?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This applies in all aspects of life; your health, your career, your level of happiness and more. In each case, your journey of accomplishment, failure and success depends on progression.  Never perfection.  It’s about knowing how to find your way back to what serves you best when you’ve fallen off course.  It’s exploring new ideas, foods, and trails to find your way when the current situation isn’t working.  It’s understanding your “why” behind all of it, taking ownership of your choices and consciously committing to make a change, and then following through with it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It’s never about perfection; a healthy, resilient, happy life is all about progression.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you find yourself off course today.  Maybe you’re tired of waking up tired.  Maybe stress has gripped you so tightly you feel you can’t breathe.  Or maybe you’ve longed for better health for years now and are ready to do something, just one thing, to better the situation.  I encourage you to start with this:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ol>
<li>Close your eyes, and take 5 deep belly breaths.  Nice and slow, relaxing your shoulders, clearing your mind, relaxing your body.</li>
<li>Ask yourself “what ONE thing could I do today to help the situation?”  Maybe a brisk 10 min walk is a good start, or making a salad for lunch, or saying no because, honestly, your plate is already overflowing.  Decide on your one thing and follow through with action.  Awareness and ideas are marvelous; implementation is where change happens.</li>
<li>Repeat this every single day, and build on your ONE simple choice with another.  Taking things one step at a time helps build momentum until you’re in a place where you can do more.  There’s no need to do an overhaul on your life; small shifts amount to big returns.  Just focus on the ONE thing each day and build from there.  Before you know it, each little step will have turned into you walking a marathon and you’ll feel incredible!</li>
<li>The fourth and final thing is to remember that negative thoughts and self-talk only hold us back from progress.  Shut those thoughts down, replace them with supportive, positive, powerful words and offer yourself grace along the way, taking  it one step at a time.</li>

<p>There’s one common limiting factor that has affected every single client I’ve worked with for the past 10 years.  Each client has desired better quality of health, some seeking increased energy, others wanting to decrease pain in the body, many needing better sleep, and more and more who want to decrease the anxiety they’re experiencing; the list of desires is long.  In every case, they’ve tried different things to help their health, but were never able to make the long-term change they wanted.  This one common limiting factor held them back from creating a life of health, resilience and happiness and maybe it’s affecting you too!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This one common limiting factor is what I call “the gap”.  The gap is the space between your desired life, and the one you currently live; the health and happiness you may be lacking today, and that which you desire.  This gap exists because we rarely take the time to assess our daily choices and understand the true shift that needs to be made in order to live the life we desire.  When our choices are out of alignment and are working against our desired outcome, the journey will be a long, constant battle.  We help you close the gap and create lifelong change.</p>

<ol>
<li>Beyond assessing and understanding the shift that needs to be made is the action necessary to create change.  This necessary step can also be a challenge; we’re all keeping up with the busyness of life and allow ourselves to fall to the bottom of the list.  If this is where you are today, I want to offer a few quick steps to assess, take action and create a lifelong shift to achieve your desired health and happiness.</li>
<li>Identify one area in life where your habits are currently working against your desired outcome.  For instance, maybe you desire better sleep but you work late into the night and then expect your body to transition directly into rest.  Or you want to lose weight but find yourself snacking all night long.  Maybe it’s that you really want to be in better shape but never find the time for exercise.  Identify your sticking point, where your habits currently work against your desired outcome; write this down on a piece of paper.</li>
<li>Next, you’ll select one action step to focus on; we can’t overhaul everything overnight so let’s decide on just one thing.  Once you define the one action step you’ll focus on, you’ll want to set micro goals for yourself.  In the example I mentioned above, where you really want to be in shape but currently aren’t getting any exercise, your one action to focus on might be getting three 30-min exercise sessions in per week.  This is your big goal, so you’ll need to set 2-3 micro goals in order to accomplish the task of achieving your exercise sessions.  These could include:

<li>Wake up 40 min earlier on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for exercise.</li>
<li>Map out a weekly exercise plan to complete during each session.</li>
<li>Find an accountability partner so each of us can report into one another in a positive, supportive way.</li>
</ol>

</ol>

</ol>
</li>
<li>You can build on this new habit when it feels comfortable to do so, extending the days of exercise, or adding in food goals, etc.  Remember that even when you build, you’ll want to have one focused action, and create micro goals for yourself.  Developing new habits is different for everyone and typically takes about three months before it starts feeling like a natural part of your day.  I share this to encourage you to stick with it, and soon enough it’ll feel like second nature!</li>

<p>Last but never least, please be kind to yourself through the process.  Health is not about perfection, it’s all about progression.  There’ll be days when you execute exactly as planned, and others when it doesn’t go as well as you had hoped.  I ask that you take a moment to reflect on the action you took, and consider how your action helped close the gap between life today, and the life you desire.  Offer yourself grace, shift your choices accordingly, and do your best everyday to close the gap and live well.</p>

<p>Kristie, a high-level executive and member of our Healthy Roots ONE membership came to me last week with wonderful news!  Just like many of us, Kristie has the goal of decreasing her sugar intake, and making healthier choices with food.  She shared that she’s never been able to cut the sugar out before describing what a challenge it has been.  In our conversation, she shared that not only has she been able to decrease her sugar intake, she’s also feeling the benefits of her new habits!  The best news of all though is that the shift has been pretty easy, and she’s not feeling deprived “all because of the way you teach us” she said.  This is what everyone wants!  To create a lifestyle of healthy choices that fuel energetic, productive days ahead.</p>

<p>I’ve gotta say that I feel incredibly blessed to be able to do this work; honestly, I love it so much that it shouldn’t even be called “work”.  This is the exact reason I love it so much.  You see, there’s no greater return for me than to hear another person say their life has improved as the result of our care and guidance.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a time when we should want to boost the immune system, focus on our health, and do the best we can for ourselves and others, many people have found themselves in a compromised place of increased stress, sugar cravings, overconsumption, and complete lack of exercise.  </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Jokes were being made about gaining the “COVID15”, people made “essential food runs” for sugary sweets and are drowning unwanted stress with tubs of mac-n-cheese.  It’s understandable, stress causes us to crave sugar and comfort foods that ignite the “feel good” sensation in the brain.  While it all seems okay in the moment, the effects of these choices are long-lasting and I’m afraid many will walk away from this experience feeling regretful and uncomfortable as they chart the path to undo what has already been done.  </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We have a choice in every matter.  And every choice we make matters!  </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The effects of COVID19 spread far and wide; there’s been immense hardship, incredible uncertainty and unimaginable loss.  While some of this has been out of our control, there’s much that we can control.  </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our health, our happiness, our resilience . . . we have a say in all of it and our choices matter.  </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Regardless of how you may have navigated the past weeks and months in quarantine, I encourage you to stand up, start anew and make one high-quality choice for yourself.  That’s all it takes my friend, one high-quality choice will shift your perspective and boost momentum forward. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Simple choices you can make today to enhance your health and happiness include:</span></p>

<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Drink 80 oz of water.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Enjoy a cup of hot green tea.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Increase your vegetables and leafy greens by one cup every week. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Swap out a square of dark chocolate for your usual go-to treat.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Consume healthy fat at each meal.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Eat plenty of foods rich in vitamin C; red bell peppers, broccoli, kiwi, kale, Brussels sprouts, papaya, citrus fruit.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Get 8 hours of sleep.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Move every hour for 5-10 minutes of activity.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Laugh at least 3 times a day.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Express gratitude every day for things both big and small.</span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to lifelong health, and trying to overhaul everything at once is a recipe for disaster.  Start with one simple high-quality choice and follow it with another.  Before you know it, you’ll be feeling better, you’ll experience increased energy and positivity and have more to give to those around you.  </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We have a choice in every matter.  Please don’t get lost for too long, one simple shift can provide just the momentum you need to excel and make nourishing choices in every area of life.    </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I couldn’t believe what the technician said to me after my test&#8230;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Health is all about progression; it’s a journey that requires consistent, conscious thought, awareness, and high-quality choice in every area of life.  I believe that food makes a difference in the health of our body, I believe we have a choice in every matter, and also that every choice we make matters!  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I was told that a rare neuromuscular disease would shut down my organ systems, and take my life, I found myself in a state of hopelessness and despair, and I sat in that space for a long while.  But eventually, I stood up and decided to do something, anything, to help the situation.  I had a choice in how I was going to participate and I wanted to turn my focus to trying to figure out how to live!  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Through the years, my healing journey has included overcoming sugar and diet-coke addiction, and learning how to heal my body with clean, organic food. It didn’t stop there though, because I also had to make better lifestyle choices; I pray and meditate, incorporate movement into the day and consistently practice gratitude.  Every choice we make matters, and these choices have enhanced my life and health in a BIG way.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here the thing though, we never quite know the extent of the long-term benefit, or in the case of my health years ago, the long-term consequence of our choices until something is brought to our attention, or our body starts exhibiting symptoms. Sometimes it&#8217;s news of a test result or exam that provides us additional information. This is the scenario I found myself in a few weeks ago. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I had gone for my annual mammogram and the nurse called shortly thereafter and said they would need to bring me in for additional testing, the doctor had seen some abnormalities in the images.  So off I went to complete my first ultrasound, and in my mind I really felt like it wasn’t going to be anything to worry about.  Until the doctor said that I had multiple enlarged lymph nodes in my right armpit area and that he would need to see me back in 6 weeks to determine whether they have grown, remained the same in size, or possibly shrunk.  From there, he would decide if a biopsy is necessary. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Breast cancer and other forms of cancer are prevalent in my family so I’m not going to lie, I was concerned.  I am confident that I’ve done my best to support my body, but there is always more to know and do, and there are external and internal factors we can’t control.  And let’s face it, I’m at higher risk for certain diseases because of the history of my autoimmune disease and neuromuscular disease.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After 6 weeks, I returned for the second ultrasound.  As the technician was gathering the necessary information and images, she had inquired about whether I had been experiencing a cold, or anything out of the ordinary during my last visit that could’ve caused the lymph nodes to be enlarged.  I shared that I hadn’t and then she said “we always like to ask, because if someone is sick, or has an autoimmune disorder, it can impact the lymph nodes.”  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I have had an autoimmune disorder for 15 years now” I said. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Why don’t we have that in your file?” she asked, “it’s nowhere in here”.  “I guess because you all never asked, I would’ve been happy to share” I told her.  She said that this was very good information to have, and then she was off to share her findings with the doctor.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Something INCREDIBLE happened thereafter.  She returned to the exam room to share that the doctor said the lymph nodes had shrunk, and then she said “neither of us can believe you’ve had an autoimmune disease for 15 years!”  “Do you take medication for it?”  I said no, and went on to share that I care for my health needs with food and high-quality lifestyle choices.  She couldn’t believe it and went on to share that someone who’s had autoimmune for as long as I have typically have large, thick, gloppy lymph nodes and “yours look perfectly normal in this screening” she said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">She was sorry they didn’t have this information in the first place, as it’s likely I wouldn’t have needed to come back in.  However, I was jumping for joy, not only because everything looked okay but it was the FIRST time that a doctor had acknowledged that my efforts were paying off in a BIG way.  I had no idea about what an autoimmune disease can do to your lymph nodes over time, and I’m so grateful the choices I’ve made have supported mine in health.  I am also grateful they called me back, and I now know the long-term benefit my body has experienced as a result of the shifts I’ve made.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I don’t have gloppy lymph nodes!  And I’m so grateful for it.  But this is only one story of so many.  My clients who’ve reversed fatty liver disease, who’ve gotten their cholesterol numbers in normal range for the first time in years, others who manage their autoimmune disease without medication and some who’ve shed the excess weight they were carrying.  The list goes on and on.  And it all comes down to making simple high-quality shifts over time that turn into lifelong transformation.  I’m so grateful for my health, for this journey, and most of all for the privilege to guide others in health, resilience and happiness.  </span></p>
